Ammonium radical is atomic pretender
The electronegativity is essential to explain much of chemistry. It represents the ability of an atom to attract electrons from its neighbors and underlies the existence of polar covalent bonds. It also results in the substitution pattern seen in the aromatic compounds in which charge to redistribute electronegative substituents. The electronegativity is generally considered a cell of the atom in question. The presence of a sodium atom, for example, has the same effect because of its electronegativity regardless of the chemical environment in which it is located. But can the same be said of pseudo-atoms, such as ammonium?Maciej Gutowski and Alexander Whiteside Heriot-Watt University and Sotiris Xanthe Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, has undertaken to answer this question. They have now calculated the electronegativity of the ammonium complex in binary. They studied the ammonium compounds of astatine borohydrides and more - just like the alkaline salts - and confirmed that the electronegativity is similar to the alkali metals. Ammonium most resembles a sodium atom with a similar ionization potential and electron affinity. The Group stresses that the value is relatively large compared to the radius of the ammonium."In many chemical environments neutral ammonium radicals eventually as ammonium ion NH, because the electronegativity of the neutral radical is low and it will give you an electron, Gutowski said.
To explain the molecular properties, the team also examined the angular anisotropy of the case, the geometrical relaxation and responsiveness, the properties that distinguish its behavior from its molecular pseudo-atomic properties. Their predictions suggest that ammonium is very similar to alkali metal atoms and, therefore, its electronegativity may be considered in the same cell between the compounds.

Molecule, the two electrons constituting the covalent bond are equally shared by the two identical nuclei. Due to even distribution of electrons between the two nuclei, the molecule remains neutral. Such a bond is called Non-Polar Covalent Bond . However, when two different atoms are joined by a covalent bond as in HCl, the electron pair is not shared equally. Since two atoms of different atoms do not have exactly the same attraction for electrons in a bond, all bonds between unlike atoms are polar to some extent. The amount of polarity of a bond is determined by the difference of electro negativity (or tendency to attract electrons) of the two bonded atoms. The greater the difference of electro negativity between two atoms, greater the polarity. As a matter of fact, if this difference is around 1.9 & 2.9, the bond is generally ionic, meaning there by, that one atom has gained complete control of electron pair in the bond.
