Death penalty imposed in fatal beating, rape of Virginia woman
FAIRFAX, Va. — A Fairfax County judge Thursday sentenced to death a man convicted in the beating death and rape of a woman in the apartment complex where he worked.
Circuit Court Judge Jonathan Thacher imposed the sentence against Mark E. Lawlor, who had been a leasing agent in the building where 29-year-old Genevieve Orange lived, The Washington Post reported. Prosecutors say he used a key to enter her apartment in September 2008, beat her with a hammer nearly 50 times and then sexually assault her. DNA evidence at the scene implicated Lawlor.
A jury recommended the sentence in March.
Lawlor’s attorneys never disputed he killed Orange. They argued it wasn’t capital murder because Lawlor was drunk and high on crack after a daylong binge. They also claim he has severe psychological problems.
For the first time during the trial, Lawlor, wearing a green jumpsuit and glasses, expressed remorse for killing Orange.
“I hate what I became and what I did,” he said.
But Thacher rejected Lawlor’s final plea, as well as the testimony of over 50 witnesses and other evidence provided by the defense.
Orange, who grew up near Roanoke, graduated from Virginia Tech in 2001 and was an active member of the McLean Bible Church. Many of her friends and family members attended about five weeks of trial and deliberations.
Lawlor, a New Jersey native, had a history of mental health, drug and alcohol problems.
After the hearing, Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond F. Morrogh, the lead prosecutor on the case, said “justice was done.”
