With Dillon and Patsy Orlofsky, the founder of the Textile Conservation Workshop in South Salem, N.Y., as advisers, Harman was able to contact the companies that supply museums with the customized covers used in storing costume collections — suppliers who test the fabric before selling it. “There was no question that the covers had to use undyed and unbleached fabrics,” Harman says. “They had to have no zippers, no Velcro and no plastic.” She even made sure that her buttons — from the nondamaging corozo nut — met conservation standards.
