Samit Patel shows the stomach for fitness fight after earning England recall
Patel was dropped off on the outskirts of the city and had to run the eight miles back to the gym centre in 86F (30C) heat. King also devised a bizarre exercise which required Patel to use a bat 10 times the weight of a normal cricket bat while wearing an 8kg vest and weights on each leg to restrict his mobility.
The short, sharp shock treatment worked. When Patel returned to Trent Bridge for pre-season training in March he had lost more than one-and-a-half stones. The sceptics said that it would not last but Patel has adhered to his new fitness regime, stayed off the fast food and secured an England recall for the Twenty20 and one-day squads against Sri Lanka.
“We are still on his case a bit because it’s not always easy to motivate yourself to go to the gym,” said Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket Mick Newell. “Our strength and conditioning coach Kevin Paxton has done a lot of work with Samit, encouraging him to go to the gym, either the one we have on the ground or a private one that we use about a mile away.
“Since the start of the season Samit has stuck to the fitness programmes that have been drawn up for him which is something that he has failed to do in the past.
“He lost a lot of weight in those two trips he had to Australia but he has worked hard since he came back to maintain his fitness levels. For him it’s mainly about weight training and running which involves sprint and stamina work on 12 to 18-minute sessions on the treadmill.”
Eating more sensibly has also helped Patel win an England recall almost three years since he won the last of his 11 one-day international caps against India in Cuttack.
“Samit has always eaten healthily at the ground because we provide proper food for most athletes. The issue in the past has been what he eats away from the ground,” Newell said.
“He’s cut out the crisps, the fizzy drinks and the fast food which were the problem before.
“The fact that Andy Flower didn’t give up on him should have encouraged him and he can now see the benefits of his hard work.
