'Friday Night Lights' cancelled by NBC, leaves legacy with fans

Reality.

At a time little effort, money and imagination is being hit television featuring shrews without talent who can trace their fame back to ... their father being a parasite to a professional athlete turned murderer alleged thief was tough. "Friday Night Lights" was original. It was more real than the above funny that adorns our TVs today.

And that's what the writers hung their hat.

Based on the book of the same name Buzz, after the trials and tribulations of the Permian Panthers 1988 (Odessa, Texas), the series apparently rode the wake of the film, starring Billy Bob Thornton and written / directed by Pete Berg. The show, however, followed the modern day Dillon Panthers (and later East Dillon Lions), and most importantly, the head football coach Eric Taylor and his wife, a school counselor / principal Tami.

I must admit: the immediacy of exposure (compared to the first film) I was skeptical. It seemed that NBC tried to get on the success of the film for all it was worth ...and ads appeared depicting another issue of football (as if there are many). It took several years and a lot of emphasis (not really) for me to give the show a chance.

Seconds in the pilot episode, I was hooked. It was too easy. The pacing, symphonic guitars belonging to real life in the West Texas rock band Explosions in the sky, the beauty of the (Texas), and the fact that something so immature (high school football) could running a small town in the modern world has created something that is not many shows, even those belonging to the genus known as "reality TV" could portray: the reality.

And no one said a word yet.

Despite an outpouring of support and positive reviews for the show, a regime change at NBC, and a great game against the likes of "American Idol" and "Dancing with the Stars" left the show about cancellation. Constantly. It was taken for a second season. And third. And a fourth ... and finally: fifth. For a TV show with such a solid base of support and positive comments, the decision to continue year after year the show should have been obvious. But it was not the case.

After the second season, the show seemed to be accelerating with the media. But again, the producers found the show on the bubble for cancellation.

That is until DirecTV entered an agreement was reached between NBC and DirecTV to air the season on the cable network before the broadcast on NBC. It was quite extraordinary, and the move was panned by many, but saved the show.
