Gear up for a 'funky' weekend full of music, art

This weekend will be a scorcher, but that doesn't mean you should stay indoors.

If you're not attending the Melrose Arts and Crafts Festival in Natchitoches or the Buhlow Fun Park Summer Jam in Pineville, there's other fun to be had, beginning tonight with Aaron Free at Tamp and Grind Coffee.

Singer/songwriter Aaron Free has recently moved back to Alexandria from Austin, Texas. He's performed several gigs at Tamp and Grind, including the recent Mania Mania mega-concert.

There won't be Dragon Boats this time, but the Second Saturday Art Market will provide dozens of arts, food, jewelry and crafts booths.

Reverend Charley's Patent Medicine Show will perform their brand of folk music for the crowd.

What: Super Summer Funk Fest

Legendary funk stars Confunkshun and Midnight Star will take the stage at Rapides Parish Coliseum for a nostalgia-filled night of dancing, and singing and moving to the grooving. What? Wrong band? It was only to get your attention should you need to be reminded prior to Midnight Star's performance that there is, in fact, no parking on the dance floor.

VIP passes for the event are available for $30 for an individual seat or $300 for a table of 10.

What: Cenla Derby Dames Fresh Meat Clinic

The Cenla Derby Dames have staked their claim as the fiercest group of women in Cenla, and they're looking for "fresh meat."

They'll host a clinic at Skateville Sunday for anyone interested in becoming a Cenla Derby Dame. This time, there's even something in it for the guys.

The five-hour clinic will focus on skaters (dames) and referees (guys) -- no matter the skill level. The clinic will teach the basic of this fast-growing sport.

Though not required for the clinic, kneepads, elbow pads and wrist guards are recommended for the clinic.
