Training for Water System Operators: My Sojourn to China Lake NAWS
I've been away a lot over the past couple of weeks -- my apologies. I presented an Introduction to Water Distribution for the California-Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association during the week of June 13, and this past week I went to the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station (seen in today's photo) to present an Introduction to Treatment course for the crew there. I had never been to China Lake before, nor to its neighboring community of Ridgecrest. They are situated in the northern end of the Mojave Desert, a bit east of the junction of Highways 14 and 395. The crew there was surprised by how cool this June has been -- it only topped 100 degrees on three of the five days I spent there! But that was "cool" for them. I did read that Yosemite National Park may be closing portions of its camping areas due to flooding of the Merced River, and that additional releases may be needed at Lake Oroville, which is just about to experience flows over its emergency spillway. With all this water, surely the Department of Water Resources will be able to fully satisfy the requests of its customers. But so far, DWR is still promising to deliver only 80 percent of requests! B.S. Biochemistry, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo; M.S. Engineering, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles; Professional Engineer (Civil) in California; Licensed Water Treatment (V) and Distribution (III) Operator in California; Over 35 years of experience in both public and private sector positions in drinking water and wastewater/recycled water research, design, operation, and plant management. Currently devoted to teaching Water Technology and General Chemistry for College of the Canyons, and to providing continuing education to professionals in the drinking water industry.
