Pandora's Box: Joseph Cornell Unlocks the Museum of Contemporary Art Collection

CHICAGO. IL.- This summer, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago presents Pandora's Box: Joseph Cornell Unlocks the MCA Collection from June 18 to October 16, 2011. Featuring a selection of rarely seen work by the beloved American master Joseph Cornell placed in direct dialogue with works from the MCA Collection, it aims to illuminate his continuing relevance and influence. The exhibition is grouped into ten distinct themes pulled from Cornell’s work, each given its own gallery: The Box as Altar, Feathered Fantasies, The Voyeur, Repetitions, Celestial Musings, A Reductive Language, Cut and Paste, Architecture and Art, The Lure of the Ocean, and Films.

The exhibition is curated by Michael Darling, MCA James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator, who says, “These connections and comparisons allow the visitor to glean fresh insights into Cornell's place in art history, and to see an artist they thought was familiar in an entirely new way. Cornell’s work today is an amazing precursor of what has come to characterize much of contemporary art. Modern life can be defined by the barrage of imagery and profusion of stuff, both of which Cornell harnessed in endlessly creative ways. Art as thoughtful and varied as Cornell’s is bound to be rediscovered and reinterpreted on the terms of each successive generation, and from our vantage point today it is as fresh and evocative as ever.”

Joseph Cornell (1903-72) was an American artist and sculptor who is one of the most celebrated figures in modern art. His signature works -- boxed assemblages made with precious objects that he found on trips to New York bookshops and thrift stores – combined the formal rigor of Constructivism with the fantasy of Surrealism. Considered an American Surrealist, he came on the scene later than his European counterparts, but admired their work and borrowed from their absurd juxtapositions and evocation of nostalgia. Although he lived almost all of his life in a small house on Utopia Parkway in working-class Queens with his mother and brother, he nevertheless was shown in progressive galleries in New York, made contact with many of the most advanced artists of his day, and entertained curious visitors until late in his life.

The Box as Altar
Cornell’s work has been defined by the rectangular box, which he transformed into small, magical worlds by adding his collected materials.

My son wanted this thing SO bad so the Easter Bunny brought it. The Easter Bunny felt pretty smug about it, too, since she wasn’t able to find it anywhere and ordered it on line. Anyway – the thing is a complete piece of garbage. If it’s not straight up and down, it won’t blow bubbles but if it’s one degree past straight up and down, all the bubble soap runs out of his mouth all over the place. And his mouth resembles a blow up doll. AND one hand is up with a finger up and I keep thinking Curious George is flipping me off, but it’s not the right finger. My son does like him, though, and plays with him in the tub by holding him under water. The thing looks like it’s drowning and my son will squeeze his stomach and the death rattle sound is enough to make the hair on my arms stand up. It’s just creepy. The other fun thing my son does is pour glasses of water in CG’s mouth and then makes him throw up in a cup. That sound will wake the dead. I hate this toy. It is cute to watch my son wash him – kind of like a baby doll – but that’s about it. I can only imagine that it will be Curious Mold before long. Of course, the arms and legs keep coming off which makes for some nice drainage.

This toy stinks. My son has been watching Curious George on PBS now for several months, loves the show. Saw the commercial for this toy and HAD to have it. Well, it does not work, for one thing. For a HARD compression of the tummy you get one or two very small bubbles. Plus, the bottle of bubble solution was absent from the box, which was brand new not a return. Also, George’s right arm continues to fall off when the toy is played with. I can reattach it, but in 20 seconds it has become unattached again. I’m sorry i spent the approximately on this toy from Walmart. He is frustrated and so am I.

The only thing curious about this toy is that the company falsely advertised it and no bubbles come out at all! Instead what we did get is a gacking George. Yes that’s right my 3 year older begged for this toy everytime he saw it on television. Why? I’ll tell you why because they falsified the way bubbles are made and come out of it, there is no way on earth or under the sea that this toy could blow the kinds of bubbles shown on the advertisments. Plus I am upset because this was my sons big birthday gift and it doesn’t work. I was even going to buy his cousin one but now thank God I waited. The arm fell off as soon as we opened the package and it won’t stay on either. When you squeeeze it after it’s full all that happens is tons of soapy water comes gushing out the monkeys mouth, as if he had drank too much champaienge. George is cute and my son loves squishing him under his entire body and listening to the rude sounds that it emitts. Honestly folks don’t buy this piece of monkey meat! It’ll drive you bananas!
