Hyundai's Elantra earns Top Safety Pick rating
Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America's 2011 Elantra has been awarded the Top Safety Pick rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The compact sedan achieved the highest score of “good” in all crash test categories used in the assessment, including front-, side-, rollover- and rear-crash protection. In addition to performing favorably on the crash safety evaluation, a Top Safety Pick must come equipped with Electronic Stability Control, which the Elantra has featured since 2007."Elantra safety has improved tremendously over the years," said David Zuby, the IIHS' chief research officer. "The big things the automakers have done to improve crashworthiness are designing better front crush zones to manage crash energy, stronger occupant compartments to limit intrusion and stronger roofs to better protect people in rollovers."
The IIHS recently evaluated 13 small cars; five others also earned the top ranking. The 2011 Elantra features the introduction of Vehicle Stability Management, similar to the system found in Hyundai’s Equus. The VSM manages the Electronic Stability Control and the Motor-Driven electric Power Steering (MDPS).

"The 40 mpg highway 2011 Elantra is proving that compact cars can be fuel efficient while offering tremendous safety."
The Elantra also comes equipped with a braking package that includes four-wheel disc brakes, an Anti-Lock Braking System and Brake Assist, a program that provides maximum braking force when a “panic stop” is detected. Another system, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, automatically adjusts the braking application to the front and rear axles based on vehicle loading conditions.
