Indy Transponder 28-JAN-10 0300z

Fighter jets will practice over the greater Miami area Thursday, Jan. 28 from midnight until 2 a.m. Friday, military officials said. The exercises are to coordinate protection of air space over Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens during the Super Bowl on Feb. 7. Pilots from U.S. Customs and Border Protection; Civil Air Patrol, and Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command will participate. It's unlikely that residents will see the fighter jets that will fly at altitudes of 5,000 feet or higher. "The public may not see or hear anything but we want people to know what's happening in the air space and not to be concerned," Air Force Capt. Jared Scott, spokesman. "You'll probably notice commercial air traffic before you see the military jets." The 11th Annual South Shore Air Show is sure to be one of the best and largest over-water shows in the nation. Marquette Park in Gary will be the site for the 2010 show; overlooking beautiful Lake Michigan and Chicago's skyline. It also promises to be the largest special event in Northwest Indiana, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators. Saturday, July 10 & Sunday, July 11, 2010 On Jan. 24, 1946, Gen. Carl Andrew "Tooey" Spaatz was selected the first Chief of Staff of the Army Air Forces. He was also the first chief of staff of the independent Air Force and a main developer of tactical air doctrine. During World War II, he commanded the largest armada of aircraft and airmen ever assembled under the control of a single commander. VINTAGE aircraft at Lasham are being re-homed because a preservation society is no longer able to pay insurance costs. A collection of old planes and plane parts has been on display on a patch of Lasham Airfield alongside Avenue Road, near Alton, since the late 1970s. They were under the care of volunteers of the Second World War Aircraft Preservation Society (SWWAPS). SWWAPS paid a peppercorn rent to lease the land from Lasham Gliding Society and preserved the planes with the help of donations. ... Last week, along with Giovanni Maduli, I attended the Gate XXI trade fair and exhibition, held at Rome Urbe airport. Gate XXI is the first International exhibition organized in Italy dealing with the aerospace industry, "from ultralight aircraft to satellite development". This year's edition focused on the airport sector: from handling systems to baggage processing from ATC to security access, from the Passenger Line to Cargo Management.
