GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan — Citizens Against Government Overreach, the committee behind the recall effort against Rep. Paul Scott , R-Grand Blanc, still has time to file mandatory reports on how they’ve raised and spent their money, said Genesee County Elections Supervisor Doreen Fulcher.Though a deadline for filing campaign finance reports was last month, no recall question has been placed on a ballot yet. If the recall makes a ballot, the committee will be subject to the reporting deadline for that election cycle, Fulcher added.
For example, if the recall is placed on the November ballot like organizers are aiming for, the finance reporting deadline would be Oct. 28.
"We don't believe they owed us anything (in July)," Fulcher said.
The committee received a reporting waiver when it registered with the county last month, indicating they didn’t expect to raise or spend more than $1,000.
But the Michigan Education Association sent the group $25,000 on July 13. As required under the Campaign Finance Act, accepting this money would end the waiver and mandate the committee report its funding by the proper filing deadline.
As a Flint Journal alumnus, I keep asking this question: are there any editors on duty anymore?

Earlier this morning, he posted a story accusing the Paul Scott recall campaign of violating campaign finance laws. Now he has posted a second story quoting the government official in charge of election law compliance as saying there has been no violation.
Why wasn't this government official interviewed PRIOR to the publication of the original story?
It's obvious this alleged journalist jumped the gun and published a story that had been inadequately reported - and appears to have been wrong. Is the Flint Journal going to publish a retraction? These stories unjustifiably damage the credibility of the recall group.
So is this another in a long line of cases of journalistic malpractice at the Flint Journal - or does this reporter have a political agenda to do whatever he can do to support Paul Scott?
