The Big Six companies were making a profit of £75 per customer last year. This year that dropped to just £15, industry regulator Ofgems market report showed.
It was mainly down to rising wholesale costs which have shot up by 30 per cent since December because of the Middle East unrest as well as the Japanese nuclear crisis.
Experts have warned the drop in profits will mean rises of at least 15 per cent on energy bills as the companies try to claw back their revenues to please shareholders. This would add £168 to the average annual bill, taking it from £1,131 to £1,299. If prices go up further by 20 per cent bills will soar to £1,357.
Yesterday Guenther Oettinger, EU commissioner for energy, also announced gas and electricity companies would have to cut their energy sales by 1.5 per cent a year.
Insiders say this would put more pressure on the Big Six British Gas, Scottish & Southern Electricity, npower, E.ON, EDF and Scottish Power to meet their profit targets despite selling less.
