Philippine jobs situation improves slightly

MANILA — The Philippines said Wednesday that unemployment improved slightly in April, but more than one in four adults remained jobless or are looking for more work.

The National Statistics Office put the jobless rate at 7.2 percent last month, down slightly from 7.4 percent in January and significantly lower than the year-earlier level of 8.0 percent.

However, the underemployment rate, or people holding down part-time jobs, stood at 19.4 percent, unchanged from January and up from 17.8 percent in the same period last year.

Unemployment data is release on a quarterly basis.

There were 39.7 million people working, a third of them farm hands and more than half in the services sector. Just one in six worked in factories.

The Philippine economy grew by a slower than expected 4.9 percent in the three months to March, hit by a drop in global trade and less spending in infrastructure, the government said last month.

Extremely difficult. And if you do find one the pay will not be to your expectation. Those sweet jobs that might exist are already taken by someone high ups relative. Better to create your on business and make it worth while.

I forgot something, some ideas to pursue prior to moving for a possible job. There are International companies here that you might want to research and get your self hired before arriving eg. Verizon, FedEx, U.S. consulate/embassies, Peace Corps and teaching English (Korean communities here are geared for their citizen to learn English)

It is hard to get a job there and the people will look down on you if you are not filipino. And if you have a skill an get a job there it will not pay much and you will work hard, I have even heard of employers beating there workers. Nest thing to do is is think out side the box come up with a good way to do a business. If you are from some where else other then the PH save your money there then go when you get there start a business anything buy a small farm get some pigs do anything

You have not indicated what are your qualifications , but if you are a college grad and English speaking then a Call Center job is waiting for you , easy . The compensation is Php 16,000.00 per month which is like USD350.00 . It may look little when you compared to USA based compensation but what spells the difference is the living cost in Philippines is cheaper here. So go and move to Philippines , if you feel you could contribute for its growth .

It’s very hard to get a decent-paying job in the Philippines. There are many unemployed and underemployed locals; top positions are often always "reserved" for close friends and relatives of those already in power; thousands of universities produce graduates every year.

Age will also be in an issue as most companies prefer hiring "fresh grads" in order to get away with just paying the minimum wage (approximately $150 — $200 a month).

There are of course call centers and BPOs that always seem advertise vacancies (warning: high attrition rate), but take note that competition will be very tough… and almost always, the deciding factor is "connections." If you don’t know anyone to back up your application, your chances of getting a job here will be almost zero.

i am surprised with this question when most Filipinos would rather escape the situation even if it cost them to be far away from their families. why? one is age. when you are over 30, chances are less. then population. that’s the grad and undergrad competing for one kind of job. and there is this who you know thing. if there is no one to back up your application, your chance is very slim to non existent. when i was a designer back home i was earning 15k which is a little less than 400 bux. i went to mid east as a designer and i was earning 500 bux for starters but not enough coz the living expenses there is different back home. i have a family to support. i came here to the north americas working in a restaurant and i am earning much much more than the other two countries i was in. say i can put food on the table and with a little falling over. it is sad to think but hey, i may be far form my family but i can afford a lot more now than i used to.
