Highlights of River Days: Rockin' on the River
Rockin' on the River: With dozens of local and national acts from genres like rock, jazz, R&B, gospel and country scheduled to play throughout the weekend on four stages, there will be plenty of sonic delights to soak up. Headliners on the MGM Grand Detroit National Stage include pop-and-R&B royalty Chaka Khan (9:30 p.m. Saturday), "Low Rider" hitmaker War (9:30 p.m. Friday) and '90s pop-soul sensation Macy Gray (7:30 p.m. Sunday), whose infectious single "I Try" will help close the festivities.
Other performers scheduled to rock and roll downtown this weekend include Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas (7:45 p.m. Friday, MGM Grand Detroit National Stage; see story, Page 19), singer-songwriter Stewart Francke (6:15 p.m. Friday, MGM Grand Detroit National Stage), Echoes of Pink Floyd, a tribute band and laser-light show (9:30 tonight, MGM Grand Detroit National Stage), jazz sensation Kimmie Horne (7:30 p.m. Saturday, MGM Grand Detroit National Stage) and funk outfit Larry Lee & the Back in the Day Band ( 9:30 p.m. Friday, GM Stage).
Kids rule the Days: River Days has plenty of fun and educational programming lined up for kids of all ages. Radio Disney WFDF-AM (910) will be live on the festival grounds Friday through Sunday. Its lineup includes a Saturday afternoon concert (4 p.m.) that will feature artists like pop singer and rapper Coco Jones, 13, from the Disney Channel's "So Random!"
On top of the youthful jams, the Meijer Kids Zone (at Rivard Plaza, in William G. Milliken State Park) will host environmentally themed activities, including face painting, recycled crafts by Arts & Scraps, storytelling and puppet and magic shows in the Stories & Shows Theater. There will even be a giant frog puppet and collage used in a show about Detroit's marshlands.
Dance party in the D: On Saturday, River Days will join 57 cities across the world, including Paris and Rio de Janeiro, for Global Water Dances, water-inspired performances designed to bring exposure to local water issues. The performance will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday on the Michigan Lottery Stage On the Stroh Fountain Stage, the Living Arts children's ensemble will perform at 1 p.m. Saturday, while workshops will be offered by Dancers for Life at 3 p.m. Saturday and by People Dancing at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Also, from 4-5 p.m. today and 3-5 p.m. Friday, members in town for this weekend's National Square Dance Convention will hit the River Days site and show off moves like round dancing, clogging, contra, line dancing and more.
