Apple: Yes, A TV In 2011, Says Ticonderoga
By Tiernan RayIn contrast to Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster , who this morning opines that an expected ship data of later this year for an Apple ( AAPL ) Television set is too optimistic, Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities today writes that he’s inclined to believe the speculation, as it reinforces what he’d learned during a jaunt through Asia in April.
“We were the first to uncover data points that pointed to plans by Apple to launch a full blown smart TV by the end of this year,” writes White.
While we had previously highlighted why we thought Apple should enter the LCD TV market that goes beyond the current $99 TV box, our April trip provided the first data points that a full blown Apple TV product was scheduled to be launched by the end of 2011. While nothing is definitive until Apple makes an announcement, and delays in launching new products occur often in the tech world, we find today’s news story encouraging.
And while Munster believes such a device may only add a few percent to Apple’s total revenue, White thinks it would be “ yet another significant growth driver for the company ,” given Apple’s ability to charge perhaps two to three times as much as most LCD TV makers.
“Features such as FaceTime , the App Store , iTunes and gaming are a natural fit for a full blown Apple TV, combined with potential new features and technologies in the future,” writes White.
On that last score, he thinks Apple should expand its gaming capabilities for an Apple television set, given the company’s “Game Center” for iOS now has more subscribers than Microsoft’s ( MSFT ) Xbox Live.
White also thinks the buzz about the TV set could hurt LCD-related names he covers, such as AU Optronics ( AUO ), Corning ( GLW ), and LG DIsplay ( LPL ), given the prospect customers may hold off on TV purchases in anticipation, hurting an already struggling TV market.
White reiterates a Buy rating and a $612 price target on Apple stock.
Apple shares today are up 66 cents, or 0.2%, at $325.96.
