Cascade Collegiate Conference Recognizes 'Team Champions of Character'

PORTLAND, Ore. – Seventeen Cascade Collegiate Conference teams have been recognized as Team Champions of Character award recipients for exceptional commitment to the NAIA’s signature initiative during the past academic year, the conference office announced.

Teams were honored for displaying a commitment to community service and upholding the core values of the Champions of Character program.

Following is a brief synopsis of the honored teams:

Eastern Oregon University Women’s Basketball (Coach Anji Weissenfluh) – Made regular visits to Wildflower Lodge to spend time with elderly residents … donated basketball shoes to youngsters in need in Umatilla County … assisted and mentored 10 at-risk youth … led third annual breast cancer awareness activities in conjunction with the EOU Student Health Center and Susan Komen Foundation … participated in the athletic department food drive and campus clean-up day … posted a team GPA of 3.20 … no ejections during the season.

Northwest Christian Men’s Basketball (Coach Corey Anderson) – Team GPA of 3.03, five Academic All-CCC and two NAIA Scholar-Athlete selections … senior Brent McKee was named the NCU Accounting Student of the Year … team continued to volunteer with St. Vincent DePaul’s to assist with preparing and distributing food boxes and turkeys during the Christmas season … in conjunction with Special Olympics Oregon, hosted an on-campus coaches clinic for local Special Olympics basketball coaches … hosted Special Olympics athletes at home games.

Oregon Tech Men’s Basketball (Coach Dan Miles) – The Hustlin’ Owls carry a team GPA of 3.24 and featured a pair of Academic All-Americans and seven Academic All-CCC honorees … community outreach was extensive, including working with the local chapter of Special Olympics, reading to elementary school students, visiting with members of the Crystal Terrace Retirement Community, and staging youth basketball clinics … Oregon Tech also was heavily involved in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer campaign, including donning pink uniforms for a game in support of breast cancer awareness … the Owls also helped sponsor schooling costs for two orphans in Africa … the team did not have a technical foul or ejection in 35 games.
