Hairstyles that fit your face

A few years ago, a client brought along a photo of Jessica Simpson when she sat in hairstylist Ashley Riddle’s chair.

“I want to look like that,” she told Riddle, referring to the singer’s hair.

Riddle’s response?

“I want to look like that, too.”

Unfortunately, said Riddle, a Maryland-based hairstylist who started as a shampoo girl and now owns her own wedding-hair business, Up Do’s for I Do’s, achieving the same head of hair as a celebrity is often not realistic.

Most Hollywood “it girls” wear extensions and likely get their hair done more than every six to eight weeks, which is what Riddle recommends for non-celebrity tresses. Those red-carpet looks, she said, are often the result of hours in a stylist’s chair.

Still, the non-rich-and-famous have plenty of options for good hair. Riddle recommends getting a haircut that best suits your face shape and offered the following guidelines:

Oval-shaped face

Riddle calls this the ideal face shape. Those with oval-shaped faces tend to have features that are evenly spaced from forehead to chin. Just about any hairstyle will complement this shape. Riddle said with the right cut, ladies who lack this shape can get their hair styled so it gives the illusion of an oval face.

Oblong face

Riddle thinks many people confuse this face shape with oval. She says they’re very similar, but the face tends to be longer from the forehead all the way down to the chin. A hairstyle with fullness on the sides will help even out this shape.

Rectangle-shaped face

This shape is similar to oblong, but the difference is that the forehead and jawline are wide. Just like an oblong face, a cut that adds fullness and layers at the sides will help “break up the boxiness,” Riddle said. In addition, adding soft waves or curls will distract from the shape of the face.

Round face

Women with this category tend to have a fuller face shape. Keep the hair from making the face look more round by opting for a style that’s long — below chin length. A longer hairstyle will help slim the face. “We certainly don’t want to add width or bulky layers to this face shape,” Riddle said.
