Harley-Davidson motorcycles and the racetrack used to go together like peanut butter and brussel sprouts.

But for 2011, the Parts Canada Superbike Series (CSBK) has a new class and only those riding Harley-Davidson XR1200s need apply.

When the XR1200 was introduced a couple of years ago, it immediately jumped onto my top 10 list of “Bikes I'd Spend My Own Money On.”

The XR is raw and visceral — it combines the styling of a Harley flat tracker with a chassis that's made for those who like to go around corners. The good looks are complemented by the sweet handling chassis and willing, if not overly strong, motor.

XRs entered in the CSBK series must be equipped with the official Vance & Hines Race Kit, which includes a Fuelpak fuel management system, race bodywork including number plates, single seat tail section, an oil containment belly pan, and a Vance & Hines exhaust system.

The first National this year took place at the ICAR circuit north of Montreal and 13 XR1200s were on the starting grid.

Deeley Harley-Davidson had a spare race-prepped motorcycle and asked if I'd like to try it on for size at the Turn2 “test and tune” day at Calabogie Motorsports Park in late May.

I did a warm-up session on one of Turn2's school bikes and then it was time to unleash the XR. My pre-session instructions were pretty simple: “It's a new engine so don't go past 6,500 rpm. The brakes are bedded and the tires are scrubbed in, so have fun.”

The motorcycle retains the stock XR's electric start and fires up at the touch of a button. Hmmm — the stock XR sounds pretty good but this one has a definite growl to it. Nice.

Up for first gear on the race shift pattern, burble down the pit road and let ‘er rip. It pulls from down low in the rev range, just like the street XR, which is understandable as the motor is a fairly stock 1200cc Sportster. Shifts are light and crisp and it turns into the corners with little effort — again, just like the street XR.

The brakes were excellent with a firm lever and above average feel and feedback. The 20 twists, turns and blind sweepers of the five kilometre Calabogie circuit are extremely challenging and it boosted my confidence knowing that if (ahem) I got into a decreasing radius corner a little hot, I could trailbrake very deep without danger of the front end washing out.
