Surgeon named in malpractice suit fired by Lewis County General

Lowville - A general surgeon at the Hospital Lewis County General was fired earlier this month after being named in a suit for medical malpractice in July.

Dr. James V. Stillerman, who was in his ninth year at the county hospital owned, confirmed that he received a termination letter dated August 10, hospital officials said.

When reached by phone Thursday, Dr. Stillerman said the letter indicated his dismissal was retroactive to July 14. It would not disclose other details, but encouraged community members to attend a Wednesday 18 hours of the Board of Directors meeting at the hospital, 7785 N. State St.Meetings are held in Conference Room on the first floor of the Medical Arts Building.

"All that is of absolute importance will be discussed in detail there," he said.

Hospital officials were also silent on the details surrounding the dismissal.

"It has always been our policy not to disclose, in any form of public information on any employee," Christina M. Flint, the marketing of the hospital and public relations director, wrote in an email .

The termination date retroactively closely corresponds to a lawsuit the state Supreme Court against the hospital filed July 12 with the clerk of Lewis County on behalf of Kevin and Wanda Muncy Muncy Bush-Copenhagen.

Defendants specific named Dr. Stillerman and four other area physicians: family practitioners Elwin L. Stillman and Martha L. Pisaniello, emergency room physician and radiologist Robert Harryman Patrick J. Lanigan.

In the trial, Mr. Muncy says Dr.Stillerman from April 12 to 16, 2010, failed to properly assess, treat and provide follow-up care for cellulitis and an abscess on his left big toe.

He added that four other doctors from April 16 to 19, 2010, failed to provide adequate medical care, to inform Mr. Muncy risks associated with surgery apparent, follow the protocols for diabetic patients or for a consultation timely to another physician who is board certified in surgery, resulting in "serious and permanent injuries and debilitating" for the patient.

Deposits can not assign legal perpetrators of the quartet of doctors, but Dr.Stillerman is the only general surgeon in the group.

The Muncy lawyer, Michael A. Bottari, Syracuse, could not be reached Friday afternoon.

The suit seeks unspecified damages and reimbursement of legal fees for alleged pain and suffering, loss of income and enjoyment of life and pain to come for Mr. Muncy and lost "the care, compassion and Consortium "to his wife.
