Storm briefs (June 16, 2011)

: Displaced families in Alabama are outraged after being denied federal aid to rebuild their flattened homes due to “insufficient damage,” according to British newspaper The Daily Mail, riffing on an al.com report June 13. Pleasant Grove resident Jonathan Stewart said he laughed in shock after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) claimed the house his family lost in the April tornadoes was “not unsafe to live in.” He has since learned that his insurance coverage will replace the house. The article notes that FEMA officials encourage those who believe they were wrongly declared ineligible to file for appeals through local disaster recovery centers. An applicant has 60 days from the date of the determination letter to appeal. Read all about it in “Tornado-hit family denied FEMA grant to repair home... because of ‘insufficient damage,’” at www.dailymail.co.uk. : Gov. Robert Bentley says that he will consider requiring the construction of storm shelters in Alabama mobile home parks, according to a June 13 report by Jay Reeves of the Associated Press. Bentley also encouraged local officials to look at ways to harden school facilities, for example, so they can be used as community shelters. Bentley says the state is expecting more than $100 million in federal money that could be used for shelters. Bentley made his remarks during the Safer Alabama Summit held in Tuscaloosa, Monday, June 13, at which federal, state and local officials discussed making the state more storm-ready. At the Summit, FEMA representatives provided examples of safe rooms and storm shelters for homes and businesses, prices for which have dropped recently between $2,000 and $7,000, according to a June 13 report by Tiffany Glick of tuscaloosa.myfoxal.com . Phil Campbell Mayor Jerry Mays said a FEMA-approved shelter saved the lives of 50 people from his city. : A Storm Recovery Expo was held in Pleasant Grove June 11 in order to give area storm victims a chance to find a wide range of government officials and vendors in one room. The Expo, held at Pleasant Grove High School, featured officials from FEMA, the Alabama emergency Management Agency, the Jefferson County EMA and the Small Business Administration, among others. There were also some real estate people, insurance agents and cleanup specialists. According to a June 11 report by Michael Tomberlin at al.
