World Environment Day 2011 - Watch Gisele Bundchen's WED Challenge
Nations from all over the world celebrate World Environment Day (WED), an annual “holiday” observed every June 5th. WED was launched by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 in an effort to raise environmental awareness and the need for positive environmental action . Today, WED is one of the “main vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.” People, businesses and non-profits from all over the world take part in the annual event.
For the very first time, India will host the 39th Annual World Environment Day . With a different theme and message selected each year, the WED theme for 2011 is Forests: Nature at Your Service . According to the UN, our future depends on conserving and restoring the world’s forest, which covers 31 percent of the earth’s land mass. In fact, the livelihood of 1.6 billion people depends on forests.
How to Get Involved in World Environment Day
Each year, a wide range of environmental activities and events are held around the world . No matter how big or how small, everyone, everywhere should take part in the yearly observance – after all, we are all in this together. And getting involved is fun and easy.
Encourage your children to start a recycling program at school or in your neighborhood. Organize a flash mob , similar to the one from Western Kentucky University for Earth Day 2011 . Who knows, maybe it will be a big hit and go viral? Organize a road race or celebrity cook-off in your community.
