Rare 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K To Cross Auction Block
MONTVALE, New Jersey — RM Auctions said it expects a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster to command a world record auction price for a Mercedes-Benz when it goes on the block in Monterey, California, this August.
A similar 1937 540K Special Roadster from the private collection of F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone fetched $8,252,201 in October 2007.
RM Auctions noted that just 406 examples were built during the 540K's production lifecycle from 1936-'39. It was priced at around $12,000 when new. RM Auctions said in a statement that the car bound for auction is believed to be one of three surviving examples.
The vintage car was the centerpiece of a gala celebrating the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Manhattan dealership on Tuesday night. Celebrities, including rapper/actor Nick Cannon, posed for pictures in front of the car, with live music provided by Matchbox 20.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, told reporters at a New York media roundtable discussion that the opening of the new dealership is critical to the brand. "It's the only dealership that Mercedes is owning," Zetsche said. "It's a nice facility to show the strengths of the brand."

IF this is the vehicle belonging to Baroness Gisella Von Krieger to escape Germany just before the war (ext color checks, interior difficult to see from the pictures) there is significant history involved. Expect the sale to fetch record amounts if the RM auction vehicle is indeed the one belonging to the Baroness.
